The Brazilian Derivatives Markets

On December 4, 2007 The Brazilian Institute of Business Law - IBRADEMP held an event based on the discussion: "The Brazilian Derivatives Markets". The event was released at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, in New York with the coordination of Fernando Szterling, Adriana Kertzer, Guilherme Ferreira, Márcio Mello Baptista and Marcello Hallake.

Fernando Ruiz de Almeida Prado and Tiago A. D. Themudo Lessa discussed the legal and regulatory framework of the derivatives markets in Brazil, as well as the regulatory trends for the next coming years. Herman Hirsch described some of the main equity derivatives products with which he has worked and the challenges faced in structuring these product in the Brazilian context. Ilene Froom focused on cross-border transactions and the problems that still have to be overcome to develop the Brazilian derivatives markets, including foreign exchange restrictions that have persisted notwithstanding substantial regulatory developments. The event was very well attended, and the audience included attorneys and executives from the largest New York law firms and Wall Street banks.
